30 Cub Scouts from the Carrick District had a great week-end at Barrhill to celebrate the end of the Millennium.
They enjoyed a series of games and challenges linked to the Explorer Badge and with a theme based on the TV programme, The Flintstones.
Over the week-end the learned how to build shelters, planned for a expedition and cooked sausages on an open fire. On the Saturday evening visitors from Barrhill joined in the activities, dodging the dinasaurs bombs when raiding their caves for treasure, and learned some campfire songs.
Ayrshire Venture Scouts have , during the last week, transported a sack of rice through the Area.
A strange activity one might think - but it was a challenge set up by Scottish Scouts and ActionAid to help set up food rights for some of the world's poorest people.
As part of the challenge Venture Scouts in Scotland were tasked with transporting three sacks of rice through every Area of Scotland using any means of travel other than motorised transport. The three sacks started their travel in different places and were passed on between the Scout Areas.
Ayrshire picked up the South of Scotland sack of rice from Galloway Area on Tuesday night on the Ayrshire / Galloway border near Carsphairn and on Wednesday night the sack was handed over on the Carrick / Kyle District boundary (see the picture above) before continuing on its travel through Kilmarnock and Loudoun District and the Cunninghame Districts before being passed over to Renfrew and Inverclyde Area later in the week.
Three members of the Kirkland Venture Scout Unit, from Dunlop, took up the annual challenge from Cumbria Ranger Guides and Venture Scout challenge Dragnet 1999 over the week-end of 2nd-4th July.
The challenge to hike in the region of 40 miles over a 36 hour period between Midnight Friday and Sunday morning from an unknown starting point, with a team of 'chasers' trying to collect their three 'lives'. Read all about it on the above link.
The fourth member of the team (on the right) was from a local Unit co-opted in to make the team up to strength to satisfy the saftey rules.
Two presentations were made at the AGM on the 26th May at Crosshill.
Five of the six members of the winning patrol from the Area Flag attended the AGM and were presented with the Area Flag by Scottish Chief Commissioner Andy Matthew

Sir Claude Hagart-Alexander retired as Area President. Sir Claude was one of the Recipients of the Silver Wolf at the recent St George's Day Awards. Sir Claude continues his interest in the Kylesmuir District of the Area.

Sandy Gow retired as Chairman of the Area Council after holding the position for 19 years.
Sandy was appointed President of the Area Council and it was announced that Ronne Lavelette would succeed Sandy as Chairman.
Held at Lapwing Lodge on the week-end of 22/23 May, the winners were from the 19th Ayrshire (Kilwinning) and they will represent Ayrshire at the National Flag.
